In a bid to curb black money and corruption, the government will ban Rs 500 and 1,000 notes from midnight, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in a televised address to the nation.
Modi’s announcement that from midnight of Tuesday, the Rs 500 and 1,000 cash notes won’t be legal tenders anymore took all by surprise.
However, the PM assured that, “There is no need for panic. Your money will remain yours. You need not worry on this point”
He also said that those with Rs 500 and 1,000 notes can deposit them in banks and post offices between November 10 and December 30.
New ₹500 and ₹2000 currency bills will be issued by the Reserve Bank of India.
